How To Be A Substitute Teacher in Washington DC

Like most school districts in the country, the District of Columbia’s public school system is in need of qualified substitute teachers.

Substitute teachers in the District of Columbia’s public school system must hold a substitute teacher certification, unless they already possess a teaching certification or a counselor certification. In order to qualify for a substitute teacher certification, a candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree in any subject or have completed sixty credit hours of coursework at an accredited university.

To apply to become a substitute teacher in DC’s public school system, a candidate should submit a resume and application at a local school. After passing the initial inspection, the candidate will be helped through the application process of getting their substitute teacher certification.

Pay in the DC public school system varies slightly by school, with the daily pay rate between $74.20 and $80 per day. As long as an individual’s substitute teaching certification is kept current, there is no limit to the number of days a substitute can work in a year.
